ERBIL — Kurdistan Region’s leading academic institutions are presenting a conference in Erbil today on the systematic persecution and genocide of Faili Kurds under previous Iraqi regimes.
President Masoud Barzani, Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani are taking part in the conference, which is organized by universities of Salahaddin, Duhok, and Soran in collaboration with experts on genocide.
Previous Iraqi regimes diplaced and exiled nearly 600,000 Faili Kurds to Iran, and seized their properties in 1970s and 1980s. Nearly 22,000 Failis went missing during that period.
They also stripped thousands of Failis from their citizenship due to their distinct ethnic identity, and defense of their national and cultural rights as indigenous citizens of the country.
